"BE PATIENT, THE LORD IS NOT FINISHED YET WITH ME"

Such a day of heavy network jamming in Clinique de L'Espoir, and after changing the defective Switch in the Hospital, Pa asked me if I could do him a favour and I immediately responded positively.

Pa gently lifted his hand and guided my look over to his office wardrobe and asked me to pull out a piece of metal and to fix it on His Office Door!

I took out the metal and my eyes quickly went through what was inscribed on it!

The words flashed in my heart:

"BE PATIENT, THE LORD IS NOT FINISHED YET WITH ME "

So many phrases came into my brain. I quickly got a nail and a hammer and had this tough message fixed just where he asked me to.

When a patient or visitor was to come into Pa's office, the person had to read this notice.

Pa and I would always discuss after most of my interventions and during one of our visits, I asked him this question: How did you come about discovering this drug against HIV-AIDS?

Pa, looked at me from behind his desk, licked his lower lip, with his characteristic smile he said:

Mr Cho, GOD SHOWED ME! I did not do anything!

As if I finally got into cool water during a very hot day,  I pressed on: What is it that God showed you cures HIV-AIDS?

Maybe Pa did not expect a Computer Network Consultant to be having questions on Biology to this extend, I will never know for now, he smiled again, ooh yes! That VANHIVAXIC smile and this time around he said:

"The Solution is just there in nature"

That answer puzzled me and continues to. Then he explained certains things to me, meanwhile he was always trying to use earth bound examples not getting into the intricacies of CD4 etc!

He showed me mails in which high profile individuals were refuting the treatment and other high profile men were counteracting by publicly approving the contrary because they themselves received his treatment and they became strong. This time this mail came from South Africa after I had to reset his gmail email password!

I passed such special moments with Pa just in that same office. I do remember this one storey of how he had to carry a classmate of his on his back from SASSE to Victoria on foot so as to take this his sick classmate to the nearest hospital which was down in Victoria! I sat quiet and I imagined the force of resistant choice for good that empowered him. Only as he said, before he could arrive Victoria, that his classmate died on his back and he only realised it at the Hospital!

what about this other story,  during the 3rd term holidays, he had to go to Bamenda ON FOOT! They left from Buea, went to Kumba, Mamfe and moved into Bamenda! It took them 3 months! His parents thought something must have happened to him.

Pa made me think twice over fits of laughter: during their young boy times, the had leisure using their legs to cover hundreds of kilometres but today his children would not move around except in a car and that his children are lazy not getting enough body work which would make them resistant!

I really have much to say , can I forget this other one about my own life! I throw it out here: Pa once asked me to come to his Residence and receive a dress of His wife which he was offering to my wife! A dress I could never receive for her since I am not married! I told him I am not married!

He look at me and I know much then went through his brain!

We discussed ! Yeah we really discussed till we came to this point of THE HOLY SPIRIT! During this talk we talked about the bad guys and the nice guys! He asked me to elaborate and I started that I have discovered that in reality there are only two types of people on the face of this earth: those of The Lord Jesus Christ (nice guys) and those of The Lord Satan Lucifer (bad guys). I said that was the only two people I could find from the Bible perspective.

Again, Pa looked at me and said, from a biological point, a bad man remains a bad man because he carries in his blood bad genes; and a nice man because he carries in his genes nice genes! It struck me as a blow because there he was accepting Biblical truth using gene information!

I asked him what could be done for the bad guy to become nice? he said, change his genes! Then I figured out what the bible says about being Born Again! We all come into this world sinners and need a rebirth! Amen

I saw then YHWH's finite chance on mankind! Repent and be BORN AGAIN!

I told him about and experience I have in which my body develops heat on certain parts and I wanted to know if Biologically it is posible? I said for instance my hands!! The temperature on them reaches 38.5 ° C and I do not have high fever. I asked him what he thinks produces this heat as tested wth a thermometre! He said he wouldn't be able to know that but one thing is certain: THE THERMOMETER RECORDS A HEAT DIFFERENCE AND MOST CERTAINLY SOMETHING

WAS PRODUCING THIS HEAT! He said, there is a heat source in me!

I could not withhold the source from Him and I told Him what was the Heat Source!

Then came to this day when Dr Bisong of Clinique de l'Espoir called. I was then in Yaounde and went to the Office. He told me : Pa is hospitalised and under intensive care in CUSS Hospital!

I asked how serious it is and he said very critical because he has been in coma. I took off to the hospital as it was  past 12 and proper visiting hours of CUSS! I arrived at his ward, could not get in because the nurses were cleaning him. I waited outside till visiting time was over and the nurses were still with him!

I left and decided to come the next day. I arrived quite on time and met a Senior brother of mine and I told him why I was in the Hospital. He himself (Bro Charles) accompanied me. We went through the control and could finally enter into his room.  I introduced myself as I met Pa Niba with two other ladies in the ward.

We sang , we prayed and we pleaded for The Lord Jesus Christ to forgive him for any sins he might have and demanded that May The Lord Jesus Christ fill Pa with His Holy Spirit!

We sang:

It's only You Jesus (2times)

We worship You Jesus (2times) but all these words in the ngemba vernacular!

#aa ni téh wùo Nwï 'Ngon, aa ni téh wùo

# mbô'gheu 'nkong wùo Nwï 'Ngon, mbô'gheu 'nkong wùo etc

OOOOOOOoooh tears, falling from my eyes then!

At the end of our mini service, the ladies with whom we were, informed us that Pa shoked his hand to make us know he was with us during the prayers!

I was just joyful. So short as the time could be, having been that we came at 1pm, it was already 2pm, time to end visit. The lady en poste came, and asked us out : IL EST L'HEURE DE SORTIR MESSIEURS!

We left and by 7 PM that same day, Pa rested in The Lord Jesus Christ,AMen!

Till I meet with Him there in the Land of Glory of The Lord Jesus Christ,

I do remember him, his cool words of bravery, of love, his stern moments of truth and his firm decisions.

For his life, I thank The Eternal Most High Lord Jesus Christ for permitting me to know him here before meeting him overthere in glory!

It is true, The Lord Giveth and The Lord Taketh, Praise The Name of The Lord ! AMEN

Yes, It is not VANHIVAX, it is GODHIVAX, AMEN!

To the family: stay in true love and let peace be your sole banner. Refute DIVISION, Amen!

Prof VA Ngu: An Inspiration of Grace and Hope  to “Seek Ye First the Question…”
On December 1, 2000 the World AIDS Day, I called on Prof Anoma Ngu and  asked if I could meet with him and so he invited me to the Hope Clinic in Essos at 3pm. That day every thing research wise changed for me. I went to discuss what further progress he had made since 1998 when I tried in vain Boston-wide to secure a laboratory to proof by scanning electron microscopy on his technique for VANHIVAX production but our conversation quickly turned on to “Fevers” at which point I was told “fevers” are a good thing but the body cannot produce high temperatures from within due to its effects on the neuronal system.  He pointed to the fact that the Africans who cover the fever stricken patient with a blanket over a boiling brew of herbs are not stupid but are attempting to raise the ill person’s peripheral temperature to the right level. He believed the body would then produce what he called - the body’s natural “antibiotics” that would get rid of the infection. As a scientist, I began to display my Boston wisdom of the existence of molecules called heat shock proteins and what their roles were. He turned to me and cautioned me to follow natural observations and my instincts and ask a logical question about any problems, before being diverted to what the literature said of any of these. He then handed me the article he had published in Medical Hypothesis on fevers and as I  began to ponder, he cautioned again to break away from the western grip of my education that only broadened my scope and to think in abstraction, “out of the box” and as he put it in biblical phraseology - “seek ye first the question and all the answers will be yours”. I immediately resonated with it for I knew then where Prof VPK. Titanji my former thesis supervisor having worked with him had taken that slogan from.   Since then, I went on to propose and obtain grants that allowed me research on this line in the malaria infection.  I informed him of the developments and lately I had just made a new finding of a genetic variant  of a molecule in young children with high fevers, we strongly believe would help them even clear resistant malaria parasites with or without drugs. This same molecule was shown in literature to be produced in protected individuals in discordant couples with the HIV infection - a molecule of general anti-infection importance. I geared up to tell him of it as a possible addition to VANHIVAX, when he was called onto the onward journey by the Lord. May our last conversations live on in me and to you I dedicate this poem in gratitude for your mentorship and inspiration.
                                                         Of Grace and Hope
Deeds of love is all we show.
Examples of us as models.
Advocates of  truth we all strive. For,
Truth indeed provides the hope. A
Harmonious  life is God revered.
For unto each, a gift indeed,
And unto each a given task,
But to a few is wisdom blessed.
For when the race of life is run
And we transit on to glory,
Looking back, our thoughts and deeds
That sprang  to us from deep within.
Of deeds that made an impact though
That  moved  the lives of many folks.
Such path is one of highest praise.
Had we in ernest done our best,
We’ll  feel same peace and grace within,
A life of truth and joy and hope.
We’ll  heave  and say “Oh Lord! Thank You”

TRIBUTE TO A MAN OF DESTINY
Friend, Colleague and Fellow Adventurer,
Your friends and colleagues heard of your passing to eternity with considerable sadness, a man destined at birth to leave his mark on the sands of time.
Having survived the hazards of birth that characterized our generation, you grew up to be a pioneer. You were among the youths who walked from Bamenda to Sasse more or less building the now famous college whilst looking after yourselves and getting a valuable education; leading to competitive entry into Higher College, Yaba where we met in 1947; the only post secondary institution in all of Nigeria.
Destiny made you one of the foundation students of the University College Ibadan in 1948 and then to Medical School at the University of London. There you distinguished yourself, winning the Pathology Prize, which you received from the hands of no less than Her Royal Highness the Queen Mother. You subsequently returned to Cameroon and Nigeria- you rose to the Chair of Surgery at Ibadan and became one of Africa’s most respected academic clinicians.
Destiny threw you into the arms of a beautiful and famous artist, Etso Ugbodaga; and a lifelong partnership. On many occasions you showed your devotion to your family. We were both in Lagos on the 16/01/1966, the first Nigerian coup d’etat. You had come to Lagos that morning to attend a meeting at the Federal Ministry of Health. You found nobody there and came to my house where you learnt the news. In spite of the fact that military road blocks had been set up, you declined my invitation to stay with me whilst awaiting the events. You insisted on going back to Ibadan because you wanted to be sure that your family was safe in Ibadan. Fortunately, a senior officer recognized you at a major check point. Since you insisted you had to drive home, the colonel provided a military escort right to your doorstep.
You founded in 1962 the Association of Surgeons of West Africa placing yourself as Secretary, with the eminent Nigerian Surgeon and Administrator as Founding President Sir Samuel Manuwa. The association blossomed into the West African College of Surgeons which now awards qualifications for the specialist practice of Surgery.
Your interest in immunopathology in the 1970’s led you to elucidate the nature of African Childhood Lymphoma (Burkitt’s Tumour); causing many of these tumours to shrink and virtually disappear. This emboldened you to have a go at HIV and AIDS, and your legacy of VANHIVAX. Although you did not completely resolve the equation the man of destiny has opened a new front in the war against HIV and AIDS.
Your career as a medical teacher led you to join the company of those who sought successfully to reform medical education. Cameroon, independent in 1960, requested in 1962 advice of WHO on the creation of a medical school. The two man team comprising a British and a Francophone Belgian, Professors of Medicine recommended a traditional European model. You and I had the courage to write to Cameroon to record our objection. To our surprise the government asked for another mission, this time they came from Canada and Brazil with the Health Sciences Faculty Model. Which it was our priviledge to implement.
It is this same destiny that was evident in your long career. During the Nigerian Civil War your sense of duty led you to practice surgery among the Federal Troops in Enugu. And the same fearlessness in successive posts in Cameroon as Professor of Surgery, Vice Chancellor, Director-General of Scientific Research, Minister of Health. I remember that you relieved some of your frustrations on the Golf Course.
You were a lifetime Catholic practicing Christian and we are sure that your place is guaranteed in Heaven.

Thomas and Florence Fungwe Dr. July 1, 2011
Dearest Family of Professor Anomah Ngu,

We join with so many others who knew Professor Ngu in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. And indeed the professor touched our lives in ways that only time will tell. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived.
May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.
We have you in our prayers. We know he has gone to a much better place than the one in which he worked so untiringly to create for us. Peace.

Boniface N.Wewe The Ngonyama of Brooklyn June 27, 2011

It saddens me to learn about the passing of the most venerable Professor Victor Anomah Ngu onto eternal glory. As an admirer of his bossom friend, fellow university don and one time cabinet minister-the late Professor Bernard Nsokika Fonlon, it behooves me to state that I was mentored, benefitted from the wisdom of Professor Ngu by proxy or otherwise. My knowledge and contacts with the Ngus go back to our neighborhood of Old Town Bamenda and my church. During my primary school days in Bamenda at Big Mankon in the 1970s, I was becoming curious and questioning things as my phase of child development was in motion.By 1975 when I was in Class 7, I had heard there was a genius of a medical doctor and professor of medicine in Yaounde named Anomah Ngu.Up to my matriculation at the then University of Yaounde in 1983, I had never lost respect for Professor Ngu and then in 1985, I studied and worked at the University when he was appointed Minister of Health.Through divine providence, I also befriended Professor Bernard Fonlon and started tapping from his repertoire of wisdom. It dawned on me that Professor Fonlon was a friend, brother etc to Professor Anomah Ngu.In fact during one of my inquisitive visits to Professor Fonlon, he revealed that he lobbied and brought back Professors Anomah Ngu and Gottlieb Lobe Monekosso from Nigeria!!
As minister of health, his porfolio was not a ground to loot and enrich himself but one of service, sanitizing the profession and 'building people' in conformity with the motto of the Bernard Fonlon Society:Dodere Movere Placere!Who would forget seeing Professor Anomah Ngu even as Minister of health making his rounds at the Central Hospital in Yaounde every morning before going to his cabinet office? During his tenure as minister, some doctors in Cameroon were involved in various froms of corruption, profiteering to the detriment of their patiients. The genius that Professor Ngu was, fished out the rotten bunch all over the country with exemplary sanctions metted on them.I have fond memories of him and his wife organizing Bernard Fonlon's funeral and even the Bernard Fonlon Society after his death.I also get goose pimples remembering Professor Ngu and his wife and Professor Bernard Fonlon standing face to face and receiving Holy communion from Pope John Paul during his visit to Cameroon in 1985.It seems Professor Ngu's and even all the Ngus fame and ingenuity never went to their head as they were practising christians and very humble as evidenced by their being devout Catholics and  benefactors of different causes . The last time I saw Professor Ngu was at the saint Joseph's Metropolitan cathedral in Bamenda in 1995.  Yes, he is now with the saints just like Bernard Fonlon et al.In accordance with the Book of Job,we can only say the Lord giveth and taketh, Blessed be his name.
How about a Zulu Farewell to Professor Victor Anomah Ngu: HAMBA KAHLE Baba Victor Ngu!!!

Egbe Mbiwan Monjimbo CONDOLENCES FROM THE MBIWAN FAMILY June 27, 2011

DEAR NGU FAMILY

It is with great emotion that we learned, about a week ago now, of the transition of your beloved father, brother and uncle into Eternity. Needless to say, the news saddened us like it did everyone else who heard it, but then it did not take too long for the overwhelming sadness we felt originally, to shift a little, making way for feelings of admiration, pride and, above all, GRATITUDE to GOD for all the astounding feats accomplished by the ONE-OF-A-KIND scientist and human being the distinguished professor was. A man so gifted and talented, yet so incredibly unassuming, down-to-earth and humble; A man with unswerving, heartfelt convictions, yet so soft spoken!

The last time my sister Didi and I had the opportunity to meet him at an ExSSA-USA Convention, he wasted no time, just like every other time we had run into him before, in asking after our Dad, his long time friend and classmate from their Sasse days, whom he mentioned by name, time after time, in interviews he gave to the press, in the most complimentary of ways. In one such interview with Mountain Echoes back in 2008, he was asked the following question:

M.E.: Who are some of your contemporaries in Sasse and where are they now?

His answer:

Professor Anomah Ngu (Prof. A. Ngu): Ebai Mbiwan is one of them. Like I told you before, he was the best student in my class. He is in Douala and he called me a few days ago. Most of the other contemporaries, even those who came after us are all dead.

We therefore knew the impact that the demise of one of his truest and most loyal friends would have on our Dad who is, himself, physically unable to undertake the trip he would have LOVED to make to Bamenda, to bid his cherished friend farewell in person. He therefore took the time to dictate the lines below by phone. He asked me to “modify and edit” as I saw fit, but I have not dared alter a single thing in what is clearly PA E.A. MBIWAN’s “ODE” to his departed friend. All capitals, punctuation and suspension marks are therefore his, dictated in characteristic meticulousness:

And it came to pass that...

In the month of March 1926, a son named Victor Anomah was born to the NGU family of Baforchu, Bamenda. Eleven months before, in the month of April 1925, another son named Godfrey Ebai had been born to the MBIWAN family of Besongabang, Mamfe. These two boys, in their mid-teens, met in Sasse village in January 1941, together climbed the hill to Saint Joseph's College Sasse, and there enrolled with the admission numbers 176 & 178. After three years in SJC Sasse, the same two boys found their way to Government College Ibadan, Nigeria. Firm and fast friends all through the years, both boys became old men. Now, it has pleased the Lord GOD Almighty to call Victor back home to Himself in eternity.

In heartfelt tribute to salute your transition, Anomah, and in total loss and inability to invent original expressions, let me recall and modify as best I can, some lines from Thomas Gray and Henry Longfellow:

"...The lives of great men ... departing ... leave behind footprints on the sands of time ... footprints that another seeing ..., shall take heart again... You rest your head, Anomah, upon the lap of Earth, having been known to Fame and Fortune in medicine and science... and you now rest your head on the bosom of your Father and your God..."

Adieu, Victor Anomah, “Moto Graffis!” Adieu till we meet again to part no more!

Ebai Mbiwan (“Moto Banyangi”)

There can’t possibly be too much to add to his words, except to express our sincere condolences as we join thousands of others to pray for the repose of Professor Victor Anomah Ngu’s gentle soul.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

EGBE MBIWAN MONJIMBO,

In Charlotte, NC, for and on behalf of the MBIWAN FAMILY.

Chungong Ayafor Martin A Role Model of Tenacity June 25, 2011

Professor Victor Anomah Ngu was a role model of tenacity, honesty and dedication.  He was a public servant who undertook the numerous functions attributed to him in his life time with a great sense of commitment, assiduity and professionaliism.

In all  of his outstanding services to the nation of Cameroon in particular and to humanity in general , perhaps the most enduring was his passion for reaching out to the more vulnerable in his calling as a Medical Professional . This passion seemed to have underpinned his numerous research orientations and investments especially in the area of HIV and AIDS where he is reputed to have  treated and cured many patients.    Indeed  many are convinced that much of his research and achievements in  HIV/AIDS and other disesases may only be discovered and replicated long after his passing.

If a persons endeavours to improve the lot of mankind in this world are the halllmarks of a memorable passage to eternity , then we can safely say that Professor Anomah Ngu has graduated from this life with flying colours after having left indelible foot prints for posterity to emulate.

May God receive him with the openness, radience and simplicity which personnified the Professor, His faithful servant.

THE PASSING OF AN EDUCATED SERVANT:  PROF. VICTOR ANOMAH NGU

The passing of the venerable Professor Victor Anomah Ngu came as no surprise, because he has been ill for some time. At eighty five, he has lived a fulfilled life that has impacted many.

This was a down to earth man, yet one of the greatest academics ever produced by Cameroon. Only a very minute and highly talented medical men ever receive the title of the Queen's own Doctor. Professor Victor Anomah Ngu received that tille several years ago when he was still Professor of Medicine in the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. To date, he is the only Cameroonian ever to have been so honoured. He sacrificed all that honour and patriotically returned home to serve his country as Professor of Medicine at the University centre for Health Sciences (UCHS/CUSS), precursor of the present Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaounde. An indefatigable researcher, he received several awards, some them even after illness had turned him into a wheelchair man. Very involved with the search for a cure for AIDS, he set up a clinic and research centre in Yaounde, an important legacy.

If you met him for the first time, you would hardly know that he is the world renowned Professor of medicine, because he was simple, unassuming and willing to assist. He spoke with measure and politely to all, every word well chosen and never betraying his wide learning. When you met him for medical consultation, you felt better before even using the medicine prescribed because of the warmth of his reception, the explanation of your condition the reassuring manner in which he sent you off. This man was so wedded to his vocation that when he was called to be informed that he was being appointed Minister (which he was for many years), he made it conditional on his continuing to work in his surgical department at the Central Hospital in Yaounde. In meetings, he spoke only when it was necessary, teaching and enlightening, giving a listening ear to every participant. A truly educated man and teacher, he hardly showed off his learning as some professors do. He taught by word and deed (example) .

With his vast education and a blessed long life of eighty-five years, Professor Victor Anomah Ngu lived for the service of man. His life adequately meets the Greek philosopher Socrates' definition of an educated man when he asks the question,

Whom then do I call educated?

First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter

day by day, who possess a judgement which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely miss the expedient course of action.

Next, those who are decent and honourable in their intercourse with

all men bearing easily and good-natured, which is unpleasant or offensive

to others, and being themselves as agreeable, and reasonable to their associates as is humanly possible to be.

Furthermore, those who hold their pleasures always under control, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature.

Finally and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by their

successes, who do not desert their true-selves, but hold their ground steadfastly, as wise and sober minded men, rejoicing no more in the good things which have come to them through chance, than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs since birth.

Those whose character is in accord not with one of those things, but

with all of them, these I maintain are educated and whole men, possessed of all virtues of man.

This is the man we are mourning. Rather, let us celebrate the life of Professor Victor Anomah Ngu. Let young people draw deep inspiration from this great man so he is reproduced many times.

Sincerely,

S. N. Ejedepang-Koge

Professor Fomulu & Family A Legend To Emulate June 23, 2011
Words cannot express the void left by the passing of Professor Victor Anomah Ngu.

My first contact with this great man of high scientific valor was in the 70s as a medical student in the then faculty of medicine (CUSS). I was impressed by his simplicity, discipline and his research dynamics. He instilled in his students that we literally had to keep our eyes wide open as in our voyage on earth we would come to realize that every person presents a medical abnormality which is easily ignored by the less curious.

He spoke many Cameroonian dialects and even taught me in my native language to get a point across. Not only was he my teacher but he took me under his wings as his son. To date I still live by some of the principles he instilled in me.

He has shared his wisdom with thousands of students but above all he has impacted the lives of even more patients. His passing creates an eternal vacuum and I hope we will be able to live up to the teachings of our great professor.

To his family, may the memories he shared with you console you during this difficult time. On behalf of my entire family, please accept our sincerest condolences.

Adieu Prof .... until we meet again.
